It's Friday.... Whoo's Ready for a 3 Day Weekend?

One part of our morning routine is for students to do a quick 5 minutes of math practice on xtramath.org.  Here's a snapshot of some kids sharpening their math minds!

We've been learning about the functions of the major plant organs. Today kids worked in groups of four to create a poster labeled with the plant parts and functions.  They did a great job working together!

For our class meeting today, Mr. M, one of the recess supervisors, joined us.  We read a book about playground bullies and had a great discussion!

Real Readers and Place Value

Look at these REAL READERS!  This week we have been learning about Metacognition which is what we do when we think about our reading. Text+Thinking=Real Reading!

In Math we have been working with showing numbers in word form, standard form and expanded form. Today we worked in partners to do a 3-way matching game.

New Puppy

If you came to Parent Orientation, I shared that over the summer our 12 year old Golden Retriever passed away. Well, two weeks ago we got this cute puppy!  Her name is Lexus. Our other dog's name was Buddy Lexus, so we named her Lexus in honor of Buddy's memory. We call her Lexi. She has been providing us with A LOT of excitement around the house! The top picture shows her the day we got her at 10 weeks old and exactly two weeks later! She's growing so fast! The bottom picture is of all of our pets (sleeping, as usual!).

Plant parts and Teamwork

This week we have been learning about the jobs of different plant parts. Ask your child to name the four main parts of a plant and at least one job of each part. We put celery in colored water and observed how the tubes inside the stem actually move water to other parts of the plant. See if your child can describe how leaves make food for the plant.

We also completed a teamwork activity. Students worked in groups of three to follow the directions on the task card. We will complete the other teamwork tasks this week.

Writer's Notebooks and Laptops

Today we went over our Laptop PACK expectations.  Then kids went to a website called KidBlog.
We also finished working on decorating our Writer's Notebooks.  I love the way each student personalized theirs!

We also wrote our Classroom Mission Statement today.

"Our class will do our best every day so we can get better at learning.  We will take pride in our school and our work.  We will welcome others to be part of our school family."

Our first week in third grade

We had a great first few days in third grade!  We did some fun "Get-to-know-you" activities such as this M&M activity.  Students then introduced their partner to the class.

We also played "Would you rather?" as the kids chose one side of the room based on the choice they would rather have.  For example:  Would you rather be a millionaire or Find the cure for cancer?  It was interesting and fun!

Hopefully you saw the paper that came home this week requesting pictures and magazine clippings to decorate our writer's notebooks.  I'd like for them to bring these items to school on Monday.

An invitation to attend the PTA ice cream social on August 21 was sent home, which also included information about the Watch DOGS kick-off on August 29.  Both will be held at 6:00 pm.  I hope you can attend one or both events!  You can also attend our first PTA meeting on August 27.  We are really hoping for an increased participation in our Tiffany Ridge PTA this year.

On Thursday, we celebrated Kaihliya's birthday with some yummy cupcakes.  Kaihliya received a birthday book from the office, which is something new this year that our PTA is sponsoring.

Next week we will start curriculum in all subject areas.  We will continue to teach and review class and school expectations.  Watch for more news next week!

Red Rover...

I saw this today and it made me giggle!  Yes, our summer is almost over. Can you believe it?  But for me, that means new students and new adventures!  I'm looking forward to the routine that school brings.  I can't wait to meet all my new third graders and their parents!  It's going to be a great year!
